5A Identifying Local Opportunities
- Youth Vaping Increases in Alachua County (https://www.alligator.org/news/youth-vaping-increases-in-alachua-county/article_91200192-1dd5-11e9-9850-bbdf28ac9a68.html)
· Alachua County has seen a substantial increase in teenagers using vapes and e-cigarettes over the past few years. With more companies attempting to market young consumers with flavored juices and intricate designs, it's become more accessible for high schoolers and even middle schoolers to get their hands on one.
· The prevalence and exposure to smoking have gotten out of control in our society. Especially after all the research that has been done proving the practice is terrible on your health. The smoking age should probably be adjusted from 18 to 21, like alcohol, to possibly fix the problem that we have created.
· Kids under 17 years old, their parents, and business owners that sell vapes and other tobacco products
.
- Florida college admissions: Getting into UF, FSU, UCF may depend a lot on where you went to high school (https://www.orlandosentinel.com/features/education/school-zone/os-ne-uf-fsu-high-schools-admissions-20181203-story.html)
· Students from higher income status neighborhoods around the state of Florida are more likely to get accepted into the state's top-universities than students from lower-income areas. This can probably be attributed to the quality of education these students are receiving compared to students in the lower income bracket that aren’t given the same opportunities as those in the higher bracket.
· A distinctive wage gap exists in the state that hinders students from certain opportunities to increase their quality of life in the future, not only financially, but also with programs in place so students in this income bracket can achieve higher SAT/ACT scores.
· Lower- and middle-income students
3. Nevermind big mistake cited as USF St. Pete takes back 430 college admission letters.
· Due to a “human error” in there admissions system, 430 college acceptance letters were revoked and taken back from applicants by the University of South Florida St. Petersburg Campus in St. Petersburg, Florida. Over 600 acceptance letters were sent out these prospective applicants, however, only 200 of those acceptance letters were actually accepted into the university.
· The problem stems from a simple “human error” meaning that someone on staff at USF St. Petersburg made the mistake. Perhaps there was a gap in communication between the admissions department and the group of staff responsible for inputting this data into there system. In addition, this problem will definitely create some negative feelings towards both the St. Pete Campus but also the main campus in Tampa, a ripple effect this massive could have a huge effect on the university’s reputation for future applicants.
· USF faculty and staff have the bulk of the problem. In addition, stakeholders, investors, and boosters might share this problem because the university as a whole could face future consequences after this incident. Lastly, USFSP applicants and their parents now face the problem of trusting USFSP and USF as a potential university for there kids.
4. Hulu ups price for live tv service cuts basic package price.
· Hulu is expanding their live-TV streaming package and with that comes an increase of the cost of that package. The service from Hulu aims to serve people who are cutting their cable plans because it offers networks like Fox, ESPN and a few dozen other channels over the internet. In addition, Hulu announced that they are decreasing their basic streaming package by $2 just one week after Netflix announced that they are increasing their basic package by $2. Obviously, this is a strong move by Hulu to attempt to sway some of the lofty Netflix customers looking for cheaper streaming prices.
· The problem I that the streaming landscape is constantly changing the way media companies provide their content to their customers. For example, companies like Disney and Sony are pulling their content from Netflix and Hulu in order to create their own streaming content in order to remain relevant and compete for customers. The other side of the problem is the gamble that these companies are playing. Which is to see how much a customer is willing to pay for their service. The difference of $2 could prove substantial or not to Hulu and Netflix, they need to test the waters to see if they can increase their profitability without shelling out the cash to obtain expensive content.
· The big media companies are faced with more and more customers switching to streaming services. The $2- and $5-dollar differences should not be a significant problem to consumers because, in the end, it is still cheaper than paying for traditional cable service or other tv providers who find ways to add fees and surcharges to increase your bill each month.
5. A woman in viral protest video fired as state explores charging boyfriend with hate crime
· A video of a woman confronting young black protesters went viral over the course of two days. The woman is seen screaming at a group of teenagers calling them a “bunch of thugs” at the “Bikes Up Guns Down” protest. Later on, in the video, the woman’s boyfriend attempts to start a conflict by running up to the group of teenagers with a gun. However, the man is later arrested and charged. Currently, the woman has been fired from her job since the video has surfaced.
· The problem is that the woman was racially profiling young teenagers and even her significant other incited violence by running up to the teenagers with a gun.
· The woman and her boyfriend have the problem because their faces have been plastered all over the news and internet because of their actions; the woman is now jobless, and her boyfriend will have a record and possibly a hate crime.
